About

Aaron Smith

Founder, Third Rail Advisory

Third Rail Advisory is the independent practice of Aaron Smith, who has been at the center of the cannabis reform movement for more than two decades. A trusted policy leader and zealous advocate for small business, Aaron has contributed to the passage or implementation of nearly every state adult-use and medical cannabis law on the books today.

In 2010, he co-founded the National Cannabis Industry Association and built it into the largest cannabis trade group in the United States, serving as CEO for 15 years. He remains on the NCIA board and continues to passionately advocate for small and independent cannabis businesses.

Aaron now advises operators, regulators, associations, investors, and policymakers navigating or entering the industry. He splits his time between Denver, Colorado, and Santa Rosa, California.
